LIFE Magazine, March 1948. Benjamin Grooms Nelson was a combat veteran with no prior experience in politics who beat the ‘political machine’ to become mayor of Cheyenne, WY. The mayor’s job paid only $250 a month, so he supplemented by working as a brakeman for the Union Pacific Railroad on Saturdays (another $150/mo.). Sunday afternoons he flew ‘Mustangs’ (rank of Captain) with the Wyoming ANG’s 187th Fighter Squadron.
