From August 24 to October 12, 1961, Jacqueline “Jackie” Cochran (1906–1980), a consultant to Northrop Corporation, set eight Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) world speed, distance and altitude records at Edwards AFB while flying the Northrop T-38A-30-NO Talon, 60-0551, seen behind Cochran and her very good friend, Colonel Chuck Yeager, in this photograph. Colonel Yeager flew “chase” in an F-100 during many of these record flights. The airplane is in the collection of the collection of the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum.
