‘Operation Teapot’ F-84 Pilots of 4926th Test Squadron, Indian Springs AFB, 1955

One response

  1. TEAPOT – At a pre-dawn briefing at Indian Springs Air Force Base, Nevada, fighter pilots of the 4926th Test Squadron (Sampling), leave the briefing room after being notified of a last-minute postponement of the first shot in the current series of nuclear tests at the Nevada Test Site. Lt. Col. James A. Watkins, right, Commander of the 4926th, has just broken the news to his pilots. Each such postponement of a shot means hours of additional work for maintenance men and pilots. The 4926th, assigned the mission of penetrating the atomic cloud to gather radioactive air samples, is a part of the Air Force Special Weapons Center at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, the organization charged with the control of all air operations during continental tests.

TEAPOT – Two automatic pilot mechanics, A/2c Lonnie E. Wollitz, Jacksonville, Florida, and A/2c Leland F. Wygant, Sturgis, Michigan, both of the 4926th Test Squadron (Sampling), recheck one of the squadron’s F-84 jet sampler aircraft.
